The project is located in the East Luwu Regency of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. It concentrates on the rich biodiversity within the Angkona and Larona Forest Management Units (KPH), which are crucial protected areas. These lush forests serve as a sanctuary for a variety of unique flora and fauna, including notable tree species such as Cinnamomum subaveniopsis, Cinnamomum sulavesianum, Vatica flavovirens, and Manilkara celebica. Additionally, the forests are home to Callicarpa cinnamomea, Callicarpa pseudoverticillata, Kalappia celebica, Cryptocarya microcos and Cryptocarya sulavesiana. The project plays a vital role in combating significant environmental threats, including land clearing, illegal logging, and a general lack of awareness regarding the importance of sustainable forest management. By addressing these challenges, the initiative seeks to foster the recovery of these precious ecosystems. Over three years, with one year already completed in 2024, the team has been actively conducting thorough population surveys and habitat mapping of the targeted species across East Luwu. The primary objective of this ambitious project is to achieve a remarkable increase of over 50% in the population size of four priority tree species by 2027. This endeavor is essential for enhancing the forests’ overall health and ensuring these invaluable species’ survival in their natural habitat.
